Doctors
began to treat infection using oxygen over a century ago; the first recorded
use of oxygen therapy was in 1879 by a French physician, Dr. J. A. Fontaine.
The treatment is popular today in Russia and Germany, but does not have
official approval in the US, and is almost unknown in the UK and Australia.
Oxygen/ozone
therapy covers a wide range of practices, all of which involve administering
oxygen as a gas or in water to help body cells and tissues function
efficiently. Ozone therapy is said to oxygenate cells and trigger chemical
reactions that destroy viruses and bacteria.
Treatment
is carried out by medically qualified therapists, and is given through an
artery or intravenously, by mouth, via the rectum or vagina, by inhalation or
absorption, or by injection into the joints or muscles. Treatment could
comprise 2-3 sessions for a minor infection or 30-40 sessions for more serious
conditions.
Oxygen
therapy is claimed to kill cancer cells; it has also been used to treat
strokes, arthritis, multiple sclerosis, and allergies. Ozone therapy has been
used to heal wounds and treat bacterial and viral diseases (it is a
controversial AIDS treatment).
