HISTORY
Aston-Patterning is named after Judith Aston, a dance and physical
education teacher, who was treated by Dr. Ida Rolf after a car
accident. Aston-Patterning was originally intended to supplement basic
Rolfing techniques. However, while Dr. Rolf worked to align people's
bodies to one model, Aston came to see that each person had a unique
alignment resulting from body structure, personality, and life
experience. Different alignments were viewed as natural adaptations by
the body to daily activity.
MEDICAL OPINION
Most doctors have no basic objection to the method as a form of physical therapy.
CONSULTING A PRACTITIONER
After assessing your movement habits, such as walking, sitting,
reaching, and lifting, and noting places of tension, the practitioner
will design a session specific to your needs. The main components are
movement education and bodywork, with ergonomics (such as adjusting
your chair or desk to the correct height for your body) and fitness
training as needed. The practitioner seeks to help you release tension
and achieve your optimal posture by encouraging an even distribution of
body weight, and unrestricted movement.
PRECAUTIONS See Rolfing.
